Unsteady fluid motion in turbomachinery can increase or decrease fluid total enthalpy. Therefore, modeling flow unsteadiness is crucial to accurately predict turbomachinery performance, detect unstable operating conditions, and identify sources of noise and vibration.

Historically, many methods simulate the aerodynamics of compressors and turbines: from pseudo-steady to fully unsteady methods. Frequency domain methods use the spatial and temporal periodicity of the flow to characterize the strong row interactions typical of multi-stage machines.

In this 30-minute CadenceTECHTALK, we introduce the theory behind the frequency domain approach and discuss some methods in the literature, from non-linear to harmonic balance. We’ll use Fidelity CFD software to showcase the non-linear harmonic method on a NASA fan.
